What does a therapy intensive involve?

Whether canine assisted, equine assisted or online, intensive EMDR therapies will have the same therapeutic elements.

1) Assessment and Planning

We need to understand:

-Your therapy goals, your hopes, and the life you want to be living.

-The emotions, experiences and memories for us to focus on in our re-processing work, and which of these to prioritise

-Any potential blocks that might come up during our therapy process

Before a therapy intensive, we will think carefully together about where the difficulties in your life have stemmed from and the strengths and resources you have.

This process starts with our initial contact, followed by completing our initial assessment materials we will send to you prior to your intensive. We will then start our intensive assessing and planning for therapy.

2) Preparation

Prior to your intensive, we will send you an intensive workbook. This contains exercises to support your preparation for the intensive, and is a vital part of helping you feel ready to start.

In order to be able to complete re-processing therapy work together, we need to support you to feel ready for this. Being able to face and connect with painful emotions and experiences is vital to this work, in a way that feels manageable. We want to look back on the past, whilst really knowing that we are now in the present.

This phase of therapy is weaved throughout our intensive, and involves practicing new skills, regulating your nervous system, and connecting with your existing strengths.

3) Re-Processing

This can often be mistaken as the most important part of our therapy work. It's definitely important. But it's one part of the process.

This is the part in therapy we re-process past experiences, help our minds and bodies store and integrate these more adaptively. In essence, we help both our mind and body understand that the past is in the past, and the trauma responses we have held on to for safety are no longer needed in the same way.

Re-processing has to involve emotional activation - that means feeling the feelings that you have understandably likely been avoiding as much as possible. But the aim here is to do this in a way that you feel you have control over, and you feel supported throughout.

3) Moving Forward

Our aim in therapy is finding a way to help you live a life that feels driven by the things that are important to you, not by trauma. Traumatic experiences hold us in the past, and make it really hard to think about a life moving forward.

We will help you visualise and install in your mind and body a sense of being able to respond to the world in new ways that feel more helpful than reacting with instinctive survival strategies.

This is where the work continues after our intensive - helping you continue to take value driven action towards where you want to be. This takes courage and commitment - we can't do this for you, but our aim is to help you find the belief that you can do it, and support you on your journey.
